In an attempt to find a solution to the growing housing shortage, California enacted a law at the beginning of this year that permits small residential units on single-family lots. Hopefully, this move will provide more affordable housing in a market that is experiencing a severe lack of housing.
What will one of these ADUs, accessory dwelling units, look like? They will be equipped with full kitchens and bathrooms. They will not be required to have a utility hookup separate from that of the main residence. They may be attached or stand alone and can be up to 1200 square feet. They may be rented, but cannot be sold separately. Present zoning restrictions will still apply as to height limits, lot coverage and zoning setbacks.
